Teatro Ebasko
OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

The 5th edition of the RaMe | International Theatre and Performing Arts Festival is part of a broader project aimed at the cultural revitalization of the village of Melissa (KR) in Calabria.

Since 2015, RaMe - The Roots of the Mediterranean has been held in the Croton area as a project by Teatro Ebasko, encompassing two main components: the Creative Cultural Residency and the Theatre and Performing Arts Festival.

CREATIVE CULTURAL RESIDENCY (RCC) • RAME FESTIVAL 2024

RaMe • The Roots of the Mediterranean | International Festival of Theater and Performing Arts is a project held since 2020 in Melissa, in the province of Crotone (Calabria).

The project is divided into two main branches: the Creative Cultural Residency - CCR (active since 2015) and the International Festival of Theater and Performing Arts (active since 2020).

The CCR is a project based on the idea of "re-inhabiting" a disadvantaged territory: 16 participants will actively engage with the village of Melissa, interacting with the local population, attending creative workshops, guided tours, symposia, conferences, and performances, while discussing contemporary art with artists, scholars, residents, and visitors.

The Festival aims to promote art in all its forms, hosting artists from around the world in Melissa. The idea is to enhance the historic center of the village through spectacular events, revitalizing abandoned places and buildings, and creating unusual or surprising situations within old streets and ancient houses.

Participation fees:

- REGISTRATIONS BY MAY 31, 2024: €375 (€350 for single payment!)
- REGISTRATIONS BY JUNE 30, 2024: €425 (€400 for single payment!)

MEALS | Participants will be served 3 main meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner + 2 snacks. The food products are mostly seasonal and locally sourced, of high nutritional quality. The dining hall is in a shared space at the school in Melissa, and local staff and cooks will handle the kitchen, integrating traditional recipes with ecological and sustainability needs.

ACCOMMODATION | Renovated ancient buildings serve as guesthouses with modern dormitories and multiple bathrooms with water-saving showers. In Calabria and southern Italy, drought is an increasingly severe issue. The RaMe staff will do their best to minimize discomfort. HISTORICAL NOTES ON MELISSA

"[...] <<The rocky roads are all twisted,
They look like branches of thorny brambles,
Yet man, defying fate,
Has turned them into welcoming paths.
The icon of the name, going back in time,
Recalls Demeter, the creator of honey,
From the village was born a hardworking town,
Changed in appearance but always faithful.>>"

Melissa has ancient origins, dating back to Greek colonizations mentioned by Ovid in "Metamorphoses"; its alleys and the remains of the Castle preserve memories of Aragonese domination and the medieval feudal system. But above all, these places tell the story of the rebellion of peasants against landowners: it was in the countryside of Melissa that the Fragalà massacre occurred in 1949. The monument to the fallen of Fragalà, dedicated to the community of Melissa by Ernesto Treccani, is still visitable today.
